Yardang Factory is an interactive installation created in collaboration with New York University’s Applied Mathematics Lab. Its goal is to educate audiences on the concept of landscape erosion in a fun and engaging way.

Special Thanks to our researcher Samuel Boury for providing us with all the statistical help we needed.

The Research

Is it possible that...

The Great Sphinx was a natural landform before the ancient Egyptians modified its surface?

Based on research from NYU Applied Mathematic Lab’s paper “Sculpting the Sphinx”. It is suggested that “nature’s hand” of wind erosions might have sculpted the base shape of a sphinx before human hands crafted the intricate details.

Ideation

How can we educate the public on the process and factors affecting wind erosion?
